First, Only, Different: An Alumni Panel
Held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023

Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Department of History and Classics presented a panel of three PC alumni speaking on their experiences in their various workplaces as diverse individuals, often the “first, only, different” (a concept coined by the famed director, Shonda Rhimes) navigating their fields. Over 100 community members gathered for the panel discussion held in Ruane 105, and many remained well into the evening after for a networking reception.
Panelists answered questions specifically related to their careers & the paths that led them there, how they learned to advocate for themselves & others in the workplace, and how PC helped them navigate these processes. The alumni were:
Maeve DuVally ‘83
Maeve DuVally obtained a BA (Bachelor of Arts) in English from Providence College as a member of the class of 1983. She then attended Columbia University where she was a fellow through the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics. She studied abroad in Japan and is fluent in Japanese. Maeve was also a financial journalist and editor in Tokyo, Washington D.C., and New York. After that, she spent several years as the Managing Director of Communications at Goldman Sachs. She serves on the boards of GLAAD, which is the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation; as well as the Connecticut-based LGBTQ+ healthcare provider Anchor Health Initiative; and Trans New York. Maeve is the principal of the consulting firm Glasheen and Co.
Judge Linda Rekas Sloan ‘91
Linda Rekas Sloan received a BS (Bachelor of Science) from Providence College in 1991. She then went on to complete a J.D. (Juris Doctor) at Boston University School of Law in 1994. Since 2014, Linda had her own private practice, Linda Rekas Sloan LLC, where she served as court-appointed receiver, special master, or commissioner for insolvent companies or for real estate disputes. She then served as the President of the Rhode Island Bar Association from 2017 – 2018. Linda is currently a Rhode Island Superior Court Judge and the first Asian American Justice there.
Osvaldo Jose Marti ‘07
Osvaldo Jose Marti graduated from Providence College in 2007 and earned a degree in business management and was an MLK scholar. He then went to the University of Pennsylvania where he obtained a master’s in education while teaching math in Philadelphia and joined the teacher development team at Teach for America. He served as the Aspiring Principal for a year at Highlander Charter School. Osvaldo co-founded the Latino Instructional Coaches National Network and became the founding principal at Middle School 2 of Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy. Osvaldo is currently the Head of Lower School at Moses Brown in Providence.
